Week 5 – Quote
“I’ve heard the stuff you say about interracial couples. I didn’t want you talking about me and Chris like that. “Chris,” he mocks. What kind of plain a** name is that?” (271)
This quote shows that Starr’s dad is a hypocrite, and a racist as well. He is making fun of Chris’ name, and he talks about interracial couples badly. You would think that someone who wanted everyone to be equal regardless of color would like interracial marriage. But instead he doesn’t like Starr dating Chris because he is white.

W4 – Quote
“I’m his baby , and I’ll always be his baby, and if being silent means I’m safe, he’s all for it. This is bigger than me and Khalil though. This is about Us, with a capital U; everybody who looks like us, feels like us, and is experiencing this pain with us despite not knowing me or Khalil. My silence isn’t helping Us.” (171)
In this quote, the author uses repetition through the word “us.” This conveys unity throughout Starr’s community. It shows that they are all dealing with this situation together, and that it effects them all. Thomas also shows my thesis to come true through “My silence isn’t helping us.” This displays that Starr is going to begin to speak up, and be the voice of the rebellion.

This movie trailer applies to the book. The Hate you Give just came out with a movie in October 2018. This may help to give you a visual of the plot.

This video tells about Angie Thomas’s inspiration for writing this book. It also shows the resemblance of the main character Starr and Angie; she used her life experiences to write this book, and convey a message.
W3 – Quote
“All I could think about was those girls I see walking around Garden Heights, babies propped on their hips.”(81) In this quote Starr is talking about teens her age that she sees already pregnant in her neighborhood. This is a real world issue. Nowadays more and more unmarried teenagers are having babies at a young age.

W2 – Synopsis
“The Hate you Give” is a book based on police brutality. Starr is a girl that goes to a preppy white kid school even though she is black; which makes her feel out of place. One night coming home from a party, Starr is riding with her friend Khalil, who she grew up with all of her life, while driving they get pulled over by a cop. The officer tells them to stay still while he goes back to the car, but due to Khalil not having respect for the cop, he moves. Out of fear that he is going to pull a gun, the cop shoots him. This sparks rebellion through the black community, and Starr becomes the leader of it. I have noticed that this book has a good amount of liberal bias in it.
